Nationalism, Geoeconomics, Protectionism and Energy Shocks – How should the EU respond?

The seminar will take place as part of the mission of the Bruegel think tank delegation, scheduled in Rome on 15 and 16 March.

Italy has been one of the States that have made up the think tank's membership since its foundation and in addition to being represented in the Group of States and in the General Assembly, it is engaged in a continuous dialogue with the think tank on strategic issues and research.

During the event, which will be attended by the Director General of the Treasury, Riccardo Barbieri Hermitte, it will be discussed whether the EU can use the various crises it is facing to strengthen the union and its industrial policy. The COVID-19 crisis, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the ensuing energy crisis are just a few of the significant challenges the European Union has had to deal with in recent years. Nationalism is increasing globally, and several nations are enacting protectionist laws like the US' Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
